Move Email and Attachments to Storage Card

PoorBest

You can free up even more memory on your phone by moving all of your downloaded mail and attachments to your Storage Card.

Updated for Windows Mobile 6!

01Using the file manager in activesync, create the following folders on your Storage Card.
\MAPI
\MAPI\ATTACHMENTS

You can actually name them whatever you want, "Inbox" for example.

02Now browse to \Windows\Messaging (SmartPhone) or \Windows\MAPI (PocketPC)

If you want to save all of your existing mail, move everything in this directory to the new ones on your Storage Card.

03Now fire up your registry editor and navigate to the following.
For WM5 Phones: [ HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MAPI ]

For WM6 Phones: [ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Inbox\Settings ]

Then create the following STRING VALUES.
Name: AttachPath
String: \Storage Card\MAPI\Attachments

Name: PropertyPath
String: \Storage Card\MAPI
04Reboot your phone and then goto your inbox. If you can see all of your mail then mission accomplished. Double check your attachments as well.

Hi,

The only issue with this is that every time I reboot my WM5 PDA these two Registry values get overwritten with their default values and email and attachments return to the RAMCARD instead of the Storage Card.

To resolve the reboot issue, remove the mail app from the Today screen from showing. It is starting before the sim card, hence it overwrites. I then tweaked my softkeys to give me a shortcut to mail instead of contacts etc..my TMobile MDA does the same thing. That way, the mail app on the Today screen won't start and overwrite and create new folders locally again. Try and see what happens, worked for me on other devices that has same issue.

How do you remove the mail app from the today screen? I see my mail messages, but I can't read them or read the attachments. Thanks.

I have a Moto Q and could not get it to work. I created the keys exactly as written:

"AttachPath" (Value)= Storage CardMAPIAttachments
"PropertyPath" (Value)= Storage CardMAPI

But it didn't work. What should the individual value name and value data be? And what should the individual key names be?

yeah, sprint moto q, need more detailed install tut. same question as above- What should the individual value name and value data be? And what should the individual key names be? Ive tried it a bunch of ways but couldnt get it to work. I left the messages on the device tho as well, and then i went into it after reboot and deleted one and then plugged in to activesync and looked at which folder had one less message and each time it was the device. I do not have a homescreen without the message notifyer on it so i couldnt try above, but still, i wanna free up this space and keep the device runnin smooth- can you help out a bit..

Value Name - Value Data
AttachPath - Storage CardMAPIAttachments
PropertyPath - Storage CardMAPI

That should work....don't use quotes or parenthesis things....

Also if you have a Q you should definitely do the speed hack and the IE temp hack

I have a Sprint Motorola Q (have had all kinds of issues with it). The disappearing emails is one of many. I simply added "recent:" before my username in the account options. Since then I haven't had any issues with that.

The next thing to do was to max out my email storage by moving it to the storage card. The above registry edits did the trick for me and DID NOT get overwritten after rebooting. I think what some of these other people are experiencing are a direct result of the fact that they are not familiar with editing the registry and are inputing things incorrectly. For starters, the article states, "Then create the following keys:" This is WRONG... they should be creating "String Values." The string names should be "AttachPath" and "PropertyPath" and the Value for the strings should be the path that you are storing the mail & attachments in (Yes, WITH slashes... for example: Storage CardMAPI)

Please change the sentence in the article that says, "Then create the following keys:" to say "Then create the following String Values:" because it's confusing the beginners.

I have updated the article to make the registry settings more clear and to add the settings for Windows Mobile 6 devices.

I am running this hack on my Q9m without any problems.

Didn't have much luck editing the registry via serveral desktop programs, including Mobile Registry Editor, on my HTC TyTN II - kept getting "Access Denied." Found a free program the works perfectly: PHM Registry Editor http://www.phm.lu/products/pocketpc/regedit/ . Works a treat! But don't download the Desktop Installer. Download Pocket PC 2002,2003 (ARM/PXA)- put in on you device - install - and you're away. ;D

I performed the steps indicated. Rebooted my device (I assume you mean turn off and back on as "reboot"). I can now see all of my e-mail including what is on my storage card. However, anything new that comes in comes in to the old location in main memory. Any thoughts?

(I'm used to working in the registry of windows based computers so I'm fairly certian that I got everything right).

When I tried to edit the registry on my sp5m, it said access denied. What am I doing wrong?

Also, there is a default string, which I cannot delete or edit.

Looking for your advice.

Thanks

Does it work if the email account is an IMAP?
Because I tried, I have the new registry values, but still the messages are downloaded in the internal memory.

While still connected to my PC via USB, I kept getting something like:
Error Synchronizing. Check your Internet settings under Connections.
I disconnected my USB, did Send/Rec'v again, and all was well. Thanks for the nifty fix.
