Joomla 1.5 Migration

Overnight I completed my migration to Joomla 1.5 (RC3).  It wasn't so bad.  There was a migration tool that converts your old DB into something that 1.5 could understand, but it doesn't export any 3rd party data.   I setup a test site to do this, which is about the only way to go about it.

The only 3rd party modules that I used extensively were Docman and JomComment.  The migration script actually brought over the categories from Docman which was helpful.  But I had to manually recreate all the documents and edit the DB directly to put back the download counts.   The most painful part was JomComment.  I had to manually re-enter all the comments directly into the DB, 2 hours or so worth of cut and paste.  Hopefully they release a migration script by the time Joomla 1.5 goes final.

I was previously using Gallery2 and a Gallery2 bridge, and although Gallery2 is very powerful on its own, I felt it time to move to something that runs native in Joomla.  I chose Phoca Gallery as it runs in Joomla 1.5 natively and looks pretty good.

Unfortunately, I will have a lot of dead links from search engines, but I think it's worth it in the long term.
